Skytyrants in Flight...Afternoon Delight

Wooooooo! Greetings and salutations. I'm on a bit of a tyranid kick and thought it was high time to show off some newly painted shit and maybe talk about one of the best units in the game.

Putting the Band Back Together

I own multiple armies but my heart still returns to my first--the Tyranids. Just a few months ago I considered selling them off or giving them away...So what happened? Why the renewed interest?

Hobbyhammer: Quick and Easy Blood Bases

Yeah, I'm not sure Bob Ross was much of a Slayer fan, he most likely rocked out to Simon and Garfunkel while painting his "happy trees," but hey, you can never really know a man's musical taste by his chosen profession. I mean, there's a chance that ol' Bob did some headbanging back in the seventies, I doubt it was Slayer, but I'll bet a month's salary that he threw on some leather and rocked out to Judas Priest at least once in his life...

What Color is Your Glottkin?

Yeesh, it's been awhile since my last post and I'm sure the two or three people that read this shitty blog figure I quit. That's not the case. Truth is, I haven't been painting much, I've been working on a super secret project that I'll share when I'm done.

In the meantime, it's been over a month since my last post, let's rock out to some S.O.D. and take a look see at the Glottkin fig.

Doubles Tourney 9.20.2014 The Fenrisian Conscription Service...

I was ten minutes late to the tourney and my partner, Rob, decided to go with Fenrisian Conscription Service as our team name...It has a certain ring to it but I think I would have gone with something a little more sassy like "Interplanetary Roto Rooters."

Karanak Conversion

This is it. My pent up rage must be unleashed. Khorne calls and when the dark lord summons us we must answer. In other words...Whatever shitty music you're listening to right now--whether it be Kate Bush or some limp dick jam band--turn it off right now, put the volume as far as the neighbors will allow it for eight minutes and listen to the following...

Piece of Mind

Best. Metal. Album. Ever? Maybe. Just maybe. Of the early '80s definitely. If you disagree, grow some balls and try to name something better.

Painthammer: How to Paint Gemstones

Gemstones...They appear on those annoying wave serpents and other space elf stuff...They also show up on a chaos dude every once in awhile and the technique can be applied to window panes, Necron scenery, etc.

Spiders!

Spiders...Yes spiders. One of the creepiest of the creepy-crawlies on our planet. Perfect for a Chaos Daemon army. But what to use and why?

Vulgar Display of Power

If you're not listening to this song after seeing the album cover above, well...You're either not a metal fan or just a big, fat lame-ass.

One of the great things about Warhammer 40,000 is that it's so metal-centric. Certain armies just give off the metal vibe and it goes hand in hand with building and painting--especially when building and painting a Khorne army.

Jamaica Plain, Wretched Hive of Chaos Activity?

It has come to my attention, through careful inspection, that my neighborhood, Jamaica Plain is bursting with activity from the chaos gods.

After investigation of the neighborhood's historical archives I found some evidence of chaos dating back to the early part of the twentieth century.

Painthammer: Exposed Flesh

It's the Fourth of July, it's pissing rain, I've got the weekend at home and I plan on painting my ass off.

Maybe at some point you've asked the interwebs, "How to paint exposed flesh?" I've got a sweet technique and truth is, I use it on a number of different models to represent a variety of things such as:

 This beast of Nurgle's guts.

Bloodletter Paint Scheme Test

One word. Primus. Two words: Pork Soda. Another fantastic album from the early nineties. I don't remember where I was when I first heard these guys but I do know what song it was:

Using Water Effects

Water effects add that extra something something, a dimension of reality, to terrain or a display board. Maybe it's the added oomph that we humans get from the shiny fake stuff or perhaps it just adds that bit of realism we need in a constant crusade to ground our plastic mans in each personal escape from reality.

Khorne!

Ok, there have been some tasty rumors of late. Apparently after GW releases the new Brettonian stuff for Warhammer Fantasy there will be some Chaos Daemon releases. There's been a lot of speculation and many of us have our fingers crossed that some new greater daemon kits will be on the way.

Mark's Trench Display Board Part Three

Whew! Almost there. I never thought taking on a miniature display board like this would absorb so much time, but it has been a huge learning experience. I feel like it has not only given me better terrain and display board making skills but also made me better at fine tuning basing and painting in a larger scale for future projects. I now want to build a 6x4 table for Evil Dice and I'm much more confident that I'll be able to do it quickly.

Here is my first decent display board. A chaos themed board with my first attempt at water effects.

Mark's Trench Display Board Part Two

If I tell ya what I'm doing today
Will you shut up and get out of my way
Someone ask me what the time is I don't know
Only know I gotta know now
No time, tryin' ta get a watch repaired
No time, never got a thing to wear
Little ringin' on the telephone
Oh no, hear a ringin' in my head now
-Anthrax, "Got the Time"

When I was a kid, I rocked out hard to Anthrax, especially the albums Persistence of Time and Among the Living. Great painting music. If you haven't listened to it in awhile I suggest plugging in and cranking the volume.

Anyway...The old saying goes, time is of the essence...And I've certainly had less of it in order to escape reality of late. The painting list continues to liveth and groweth upon the earth, I've been mulling over a new army and I really want to build some tables for Evil Dice. Yeesh.

Painthammer: Painting Wood

I'm sure there's a bad excuse for a schlong joke in there somewhere...Anyway, there's a million ways to paint wood effects but not so many tutorials out there on the interwebs. So here goes...

When painting wood, it's good to start out with something that already has somewhat of a grain to it. This little bridge below was made with popsicle sticks and some thin balsa wood that I bought at the Hobby Bunker in Malden.

First, I slathered the whole thing in Abaddon Black.

Mark's Trench Display Board Part One

The following is a work in progress of a recent trench board I've been working on for a friend.

Here's the initial set up. Pink Panther just peeking over the top there.
